| Abstract: | Background: Diabetes mellitus is among the primary causes of morbidity and mortality globally. Cardiovascular causes account for maximum morbidity and mortality in the diabetic population. Platelets are a key component in development of coronary artery disease. Diabetes is associated with accelerated platelet turnover and high reticulated platelets (RPs) or immature platelets. These are larger and more sensitive, with hyperactivity and low response to antiplatelet therapy. Immature platelet fraction is a marker which detects the turnover of circulating platelets in the blood. Immature platelet fraction (IPF) and MPV can be added to screening methods for coronary artery disease. They can serve as a risk indicator for patients by acting as an early hematological marker. |
