Abstract

Background and Objectives: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is caused by liver disease in the absence of other neurological disorders. Liver cirrhosis and its complications are a major health problem in the developing countries where cost of health care is high. This study aims to ascertain the spectrum of precipitating factors of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with cirrhosis of liver. Methods 128 cases of cirrhosis of liver who presented in hepatic encephalopathy admitted to department of general medicine at KLE Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Research Centre, Belagavi , between January 2023 and December 2023 were studied . All patients of more than 18 years of age , presenting with signs of HE were included. History and examination was done to grade encephalopathy . Investigations were done and recorded on a proforma. Prognostic stratification was done by Child Pugh score . Correlation between variables was done by using Pearson’ s correlation test. Pvalue < 0.05 was taken as level of significance.
