| Abstract: | BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormone abnormalities are frequently observed in patients with chronic renal disease. Chronic kidney disease changes the production, metabolism, and excretion of thyroid hormones. It has been noted that the production of thyroid hormone is decreased as a result of the accumulation of iodine in the blood caused by the progressive reduction of GFR in CKD. This results in abnormally low amounts of total and free T3 in serum, but normal levels of reverse T3 and free T4 in the serum. Nevertheless, there is little change in TSH levels in CKD.
