A study of lipid profile among the pre And post-menopausal women at a Teritiary care centre - a cross Sectional study

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality among women, with lipid profile alterations playing a crucial role in determining cardiovascular risk. Menopause significantly impacts lipid metabolism, increasing susceptibility to dyslipidemia and CVD. This study aims to compare the lipid profiles of premenopausal and post-menopausal women, focusing on total cholesterol (TC), lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides (TG) to assess cardiovascular risk. Materials and Methods A hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Belagavi, India, over 12 months. A total of 158 women (pre-menopausal and postmenopausal) were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Lipid profiles were assessed using enzymatic methods on a fully automated analyzer after overnight fasting. Statistical analyses, including Student’s t-test and Chi-square tests, were performed using SPSS software, with significance set at p<0.05. Results The study found that post-menopausal women exhibited significantly higher levels of TC, LDL, and TG, along with lower HDL levels, compared to pre-menopausal women. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was also notably elevated in postmenopausal women, indicating an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. These lipid alterations suggest that estrogen depletion during menopause contributes to unfavorable metabolic changes, increasing CVD risk.
